Swiss Hikes with Kids, Part 3
They’re here! Hoooooolidays ❤️
The blog posts about Swiss hikes with kids (Part 1 and Part 2) are among the most popular on the site, so here comes another batch of ideas for a summer hike with children in Switzerland. Get comfortable and let me take you into the world of family-friendly Alpine adventures!
Heidiweg
Heidi is the title character of the famous Swiss children’s novel about an orphaned girl who goes to live with her grandfather in the Alps. To this day, the cheerful and sensitive girl living in harmony with nature remains an important part of Swiss pop culture. It’s no surprise, then, that more than one mountain trail has been named after her. One of the top family routes is the high-altitude Heidiweg trail, which follows in the footsteps of this beloved heroine. No special hiking skills are required, as the entire route is practically flat and wide, making it accessible even for parents with babies in strollers. Heidi, one of Switzerland’s iconic symbols, guides us barefoot along sensory paths and, through engaging stories, encourages children to solve all kinds of tasks and riddles. Along the entire 6.5 km route (around 3.5 hours), kids definitely won’t have time to get bored 😀 Meanwhile, adults can feast their eyes on breathtaking panoramic views of the Pizol mountain massif. A true adventure and fun-filled experience for the whole family!
Stoos Ridge Hike
What more can I say? This is a truly spectacular and iconic trail, the absolute crème de la crème of the Lake Lucerne region. Walking from Klingenstock toward Fronalpstock, we follow a mountain ridge the entire way, with dramatic views plunging far below us. At times, we come quite close to steep drop-offs, the exposure is significant, and there are plenty of stairs and short climbs along the route. The strong sun exposure (bringing enough water is essential!), combined with the lack of forests and shade, can definitely be challenging. But the stunning scenery is an enormous wow factor, especially since the trail is a dream for photographers looking to capture the ultimate Swiss postcard view. At the end, you’ll find viewing platforms, a restaurant, and even a hotel where you can spend the night right on the mountaintop. In my opinion, this hike is suitable for experienced children aged 5+ or less experienced school-aged kids. Worth it a hundred times over!
Aletsch
Let’s hurry and admire glaciers while they still exist – that’s what one feels like saying! The Swiss Aletsch Glacier is the largest glacier in the Alps, and it still presents its majesty with remarkable grace, even though it is far less imposing than it was just a few decades ago. It looks absolutely otherworldly from the viewpoint atop Eggishorn, where the immense glacier tongue stretches out before your eyes. Since we’re already at nearly 3,000 meters above sea level, this is an excellent destination for the hottest summer days, as it remains pleasantly cool even during the peak of summer heat. What I highly recommend is a two- or three-hour walk from the middle station of the cable car descending to Fiesch. The mountain range rising above the vast valley reveals the grandeur of the Alps in all its glory. The trail is easy and safe even for preschoolers, and the experience is unforgettable!
Madrisa
The Madrisa summit towers high above Graubünden, not far from the Austrian border. I highly recommend this very family-friendly and safe route, with wide paths and beautiful views over the long valley and the Rhaetian Alps. The trail is quite exposed to the sun, and with very few forests or trees, the sunlight can be intense along almost the entire route, so it’s worth keeping that in mind. The trail is classified as stroller-friendly, although I should warn you about one particular spot where you’ll need to carry the stroller across a tiny narrow stream 😉 It was actually around Madrisa that, after 7 (yes, seven!) years in Switzerland, we met a family visiting from Poland for the very first time – before that, we had never encountered a single Polish family on a mountain trail in Switzerland 😉 Three years later, it’s still the only such encounter 😁 Since Davos is nearby, it’s worth spending a pleasant late afternoon in the village after your hike and cooling off in the local lake ❤️
Braunwald
The area around Braunwald is a true paradise for families! The abundance of trails here makes it easy to choose a route that perfectly matches your current needs. Braunwald is one of nine car-free villages in Switzerland, located on the border of the cantons of Glarus and Schwyz, where vehicles with combustion engines are prohibited. This creates a genuine feeling of being completely immersed in nature. In June, your eyes are treated to vast carpets of wildflower meadows and lush green grass. Every now and then, you’ll meet an Alpine cow and pass benches tucked beneath old trees, offering welcome shade and a chance to rest. It’s pure bliss and relaxation for pregnant women, while for the youngest visitors it’s an ideal route for a little bike ride – tested and approved in exactly that configuration 😉
Everyone can find a beautiful trail here, complete with views of snow-capped Alpine peaks. Since I absolutely love hikes that form a loop, I especially recommend this relaxing and easy route with panoramic views of authentic Swiss charm.
And what about you, have you already made plans for the summer holidays that have just begun in Poland?
There isn’t much time left, so you can purchase a ready-made holiday itinerary here! Switzerland offers endless opportunities for children to experience unforgettable summer adventures, while the views and memories will stay in the hearts of entire families forever ❤️
Maybe it’s time for a Swiss summer?
P.S. Another collection of my favorite Swiss hikes with kids is coming at the end of the summer! September is a wonderful time to head into the Alps with little ones! 😉
