Vienna + Bratislava + Budapest, aka a spring city break

May in Europe is the perfect time for a lovely city break. But which city to choose – and why just one? 😉 Let’s do three at once! Bratislava, Vienna and Budapest are European capitals located relatively close to each other, making them the perfect combo for an exciting, experience-packed few days in the heart of Europe.

Bratislava

Bratislava is often overlooked by tourists and sometimes dismissed as boring. What can I say? Au contraire! It’s actually a really pleasant city for a one-day trip with kids. In May, Bratislava Castle, perched on a hill above the city, turns lush and green, and there’s plenty of space around for little ones to run wild along the charming cobbled streets. You can easily get around with a stroller, and the views over the city are genuinely lovely. The Old Town is beautiful, with cozy squares and old defensive walls you can explore with kids in tow. The food isn’t exactly light, but it’s hearty, comforting, and delicious, quite similar to Polish cuisine. Staying in the center is a great idea, as you can comfortably walk through the entire historic part of Bratislava even with two small children.

Vienna

Next up: elegant Vienna! It’s not just Wiener schnitzel and Sachertorte with a cup of Viennese coffee in a traditional café. The city’s architecture is breathtaking in its grandeur. You simply can’t miss St. Stephen’s Cathedral (and a great lunch spot nearby on the pedestrian street!), the Vienna State Opera, City Hall, the Votive Church, the Burgtheater, or the surrounding Burggarten. In the area, it’s worth visiting the Hofburg Palace, right next to which you’ll find plenty of green spaces and the fascinating Butterfly House – especially magical for kids. And when it comes to architecture, it would be a shame not to see the colorful, quirky Hundertwasserhaus with your own eyes.

Vienna is a true oasis of museums, so I’d definitely pop into at least one. I especially recommend the Museum of Art History, home to one of the richest collections of the world’s greatest Impressionists. By chance, we also stumbled upon Mozart’s House hidden in an unassuming yet beautiful townhouse. Mozart was born in Vienna, and the place turned out to be as intimate as it was interesting for a short visit. For parents of little music lovers: don’t miss the House of Music. Our dance- and classical music-obsessed seven-year-old was absolutely fascinated!

A huge highlight of a spring visit to Vienna with small kids is the Wiener Prater, a public park offering not only beautiful avenues, fountains, greenery, and space to run around, but also (tucked slightly away) a large amusement park. Call it what you will – rides, Ferris wheels, and all sorts of attractions that are, frankly, completely foreign territory to me in every possible sense 😉 Still, it’s a great place to spend hours in the warm afternoon sun, maybe even with a picnic under the trees.

For those up for a slightly longer outing, I should mention Schönbrunn Palace. It’s massive, with rooms that impress even kids, and beautiful gardens. That said, the whole complex is very commercial and crowded (even off-season), so the experience lands at a solid 3/10 😉 Not discouraging you, just worth factoring into your plans. Getting there is easy, and Vienna’s public transport (especially the metro) works flawlessly, making the city very comfortable to explore with little kids..

Budapest

And finally, the grand finale of our May capital-hopping adventure: Budapest, the crème de la crème! Walking along the Danube, especially at night, with views of the impressive neo-Gothic Hungarian Parliament building (one of the largest in the world), I sometimes felt like I was back in Warsaw 😉 There’s a surprisingly similar vibe here!

It’s worth trying some local street food, and near the Opera you’ll find amazing lángos. Surprisingly, that’s not a given, even in Budapest. Despite being a national dish, it’s easy to end up with something tough, greasy, and far from fresh. But not here! The lángos near the Opera is light as a cloud and absolutely delicious. For dessert, don’t miss kürtőskalács, best enjoyed from places with a long tradition, where it’s made right in front of you. Pure heaven!

All over the city you’ll find fountains in kid-friendly squares, and for little ones, a tram ride to Margaret Island is a great idea. Rent bikes there and ride around the leafy paths – it’s a beautiful May experience with kids. From the city center, you can cross the Chain Bridge to reach the hill with the Royal Palace opposite the Parliament. You can take the Budavári Sikló funicular (about 90 seconds, quite pricey) or just use regular public transport, which is less flashy, but still a nice experience 😉

The castle district is a historic part of the city with cobbled streets, Fisherman’s Bastion, and gates offering stunning views over the Danube and Parliament. Definitely worth visiting in the afternoon or evening. You’ll also get fantastic views from Gellért Hill, which you can reach via a pleasant walk through greenery and forest. And I can’t skip one of the world’s first public parks, Városliget. It’s huge, with beautiful old trees, lots of space to run, charming park architecture, delicious espresso tonic… and an absolutely amaaaaaazing playground. Huge, thoughtfully designed, and packed with attractions – even older kids won’t get bored. Its signature feature? A giant red-and-white balloon floating high above the playground!

Cozy Bratislava, elegant Vienna, and Budapest (which completely stole my heart) make for the perfect May city break combo <3 Traveling between the cities is easy by train, public transport in each is excellent (and you can see a lot on foot), and getting there by plane is hassle-free. We spent one day in Bratislava, three in Vienna, and four in Budapest, eight days total. Maybe you feel like planning a similar spring family getaway? 😉
