Tumpak Sewu Waterfall – a Natural Wonder in Java

There’s not an ounce of exaggeration in this title. Tumpak Sewu is a jaw-dropping waterfall in Indonesia and, above all, a place that feels out of this world. Java is full of beautiful waterfalls, but this is one of those that’s truly worth seeing.

East Java

East Java is best known for the Bromo and Ijen volcanoes, so those are usually the main destinations of trips to this region. But being so close to Bromo, we would regret it terribly if we didn’t visit Tumpak Sewu – a genuine natural wonder. Surrounded by volcanoes and immersed in real jungle, we indulge our senses along the way with fresh coconuts and delicious fruit picked straight from the trees.

Experiencing the raw force of nature

Our four-hour trek starts off innocently enough, with easily accessible and well-exposed viewpoints. From the top, we admire the waterfall in all its majesty and dignified composure. But the real adventure begins shortly after, once we head down a steep descent. And it’s not just about witnessing the sheer power of the elements or the lush, over-the-top greenery – it’s about the experience, those truly tangible sensations. Practically the entire way, we walk in the water, sometimes just lightly sprinkled from above, other times hit by a proper stream, and moments later literally wading knee-deep, sometimes almost waist-deep. Along the way we pop into fantastic caves filled with deep water, and by the end we are soaked, head to toe. A change of clothes is absolutely essential 😉

An adventure for the whole family

It’s hard to put into words how incredible this experience was for our entire family. Even though some sections are fairly slippery, there are plenty of handholds along the route to help you out. Our not-quite-three-year-old daughter handled it brilliantly, but since she is, of course, her daddy’s little princess, there was no shortage of solid carrying from him. That’s what all those hours at the gym are for, after all 😉 Tumpak Sewu is truly a dream destination whether you’re traveling with an almost-nine-year-old or a preschooler. Getting around East Java can be tiring due to the roads and heavy traffic, so travel times are very approximate – and definitely longer than your common sense would suggest – but it is truly, truly, truly worth it! Smiles, and even squeals of joy and excitement, accompanied us nonstop ❤️

At the foot of Mount Semeru

A small restaurant with a terrace overlooking the monumental Semeru volcano – surrounded by vast stretches of tropical green – was a spot our driver showed us. We’re really grateful because very few people know what an amazing viewpoint this is. The unobstructed view of the enormous, active volcano, gently erupting every hour (yes, really!), takes your breath away. It’s just us, and right in front of us: Semeru. Absolutely incredible – and having a meal here feels downright magical. We sit on the floor, eat great Indonesian food, sip fresh juices from exotic fruits, and the vibe is simply beautiful ❤️

If you’re going to pick just one waterfall to see on Indonesia’s Java island, let it be Tumpak Sewu. No words or photos can truly capture the wonder of this place. As cliché as it may sound, you just have to see it with your own eyes – and, above all, experience it fully ❤️ You can start planning this unforgettable journey RIGHT NOW, RIGHT HERE!
