Mostar and Dubrovnik in one trip
A Balkan adventure for a long June weekend or a quick getaway? Combining Bosnia’s Mostar with Croatia’s Dubrovnik in one journey gives you the full Balkan flavor and lets you experience this part of the world from a few different angles. Ready for takeoff?
Charming Mostar
Mostar is famous for its Old Bridge, i.e. the city’s namesake and the Instagram star of the region. Before peak tourist season hits, you can enjoy it with slightly fewer selfie sticks around ;) The city’s history goes all the way back to Neolithic times, and its layered past is visible in the old stone architecture and sacred buildings, especially mosques. The town itself is straight out of a fairy tale, perched on the turquoise Neretva River, surrounded by green hills, with majestic snow-capped mountains in the distance. The old town is made for wandering, and the vibe in the evening is genuinely atmospheric. And let’s talk food – you can eat like royalty here without breaking the bank, because Bosnian prices are still refreshingly reasonable. Plus, there’s a heavenly local bakery on practically every corner. Few places in the world do bakeries this well ❤️
Blagaj and the Buna Spring
Besides the nearby Kravica Waterfalls (you can read more here), it’d be a crime to skip a scenic walk along the Buna River. This river bubbles up near the village of Blagaj from a dramatic karst spring. The trail is a 30-minute stroll through gorgeous scenery, totally doable with a baby in a carrier or stroller. At the end of the walk, you’re rewarded with a view straight out of a fantasy novel: a striking monastery (technically a tekke) that looks like it was built right into the rock. Water gushes out below, forming caves and mini waterfalls all around. Along the way, there are cute little cafés, which may or may not get a teeny bit flooded when the water level rises, but sipping coffee to the sound of a waterfall in the shade? Yes, please 😉
Old Town Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is just a bit over two hours by car from Mostar, tucked in the very south of Croatia. Stari Grad – the Old Town – is the city’s crown jewel. With its medieval layout, wandering its narrow lanes shaded by stone buildings is like stepping into a sensory storybook. The grand entrance gate ushers you into a maze of historical gems: plazas, monasteries, palaces, and fountains galore. On the famous Stradun street and the little alleys that spin off it, you can indulge in local cuisine, which is a seafood heaven! Sure, the ever-present staircases aren’t stroller-friendly, but come on, it’s Dubrovnik, so a little cardio is part of the deal 😉 Walk along the city walls for stunning panoramic views, and don’t skip the old port area: the boats, the bay, the salty sea breeze… chef’s kiss.
Dubrovnik from above
The view from Mount Srđ is another postcard-perfect Dubrovnik moment. Whether you ride the iconic cable car or hike your way up (go you!), the sunset panorama is pure magic. You’ll see the city laid out before you, a peninsula wrapped in deep-blue sea and lush greenery. Those famous orange rooftops from above? That’s the Dubrovnik shot. After sunset, head back down for a romantic dinner in the Old Town and a dreamy seaside stroll. Pro tip: book a place just outside the center – close enough to enjoy it, but far enough to sleep like a baby.
A Bosnian-Croatian getaway is the ultimate move for a quick June escape. You’ll soak up Balkan vibes, culture, and nature all in one neat little trip. Plan it before the summer crowds roll in.
